Daughter of Kauai was painted while I was visiting the beautiful island of Kauai. The piece reflects the blend of cultures that inhabit the island. While exploring a vintage shop in Hanalei, I discovered a book of men’s ties from the 1930s and 40s. The tropical patterns from that era were fascinating and became the perfect inspiration to incorporate into this painting, adding an unexpected and sultry twist. My intention with this piece was to portray a woman in a different light than the sexualized image so often seen. She is a woman of gentle beauty, strong character, and radiates a natural tropical allure.
